After Bernie Parent and before Ron Hextall, there was the rising star who ultimately could have eclipsed them both: Pelle Lindbergh. Beloved by Philly fans, the Swedish netminder was on top of the world in 1985, having led the NHL in wins, won the Vezina Trophy, and taken his team to the Stanley Cup Finals. But a drunk-driving accident cut his life short at the age of 26—and, sadly, has cast a shroud over his legacy. Yes, Lindbergh's #31 was worn in a memorial armband tribute, and yes, no other Flyer has worn it since, but #31 has yet to be officially retired in the rafters. Given the tragic circumstances, there was a very short window of time in Lindbergh's life for any autographs, let alone on his 1983-84 OPC rookie card. This sharp NM example boasts a strong "9-10" signature. Also noteworthy is its iconic image of Lindbergh as one of the last goalies to wear the old-style, Friday the 13th-type mask—just before it became obsolete. Auction LOA from JSA.
