Description

Prompting an unprecedented frenzy and a record television audience, four young musicians arrived on American soil and gave their first live television performance on February 9, 1964. The venue, of course, was a New York City CBS studio known as the “Ed Sullivan Theater.” And so began the “British Invasion.” While millions (mostly of the female species) sought to see the pop phenoms up close, a privileged few actually got the chance. This photograph signed by all (4) Beatles is a treasured keepsake from perhaps the most significant night in rock-n-roll history. A former CBS make-up artist not only did the musicians’ hair that night, but took full advantage of the opportunity to get the signatures of all (4). Executed in blue ballpoint on the reverse of the stylist’s personal 3-1/2 x 3-1/2” photo of his infant son, the autographs are decidedly potent and unmistakable as those of the “Fab Four.” Atop the piece, the scripting of Paul McCartney is readily identifiable, yet has endured paper loss affecting the surname. Just below are: Ringo Starr (“9-10” strength); George Harrison (“9-10” strength, with deference to separation mended by adhesive tape on the obverse); and John Lennon (“9-10” strength, with deference to separation mended by tape on the obverse, as well as a missing piece that contained the conclusion of the surname). While the item had been stored in the stylist’s wallet for a lengthy period, it remains a sacred rock relic from that groundbreaking night in entertainment history. Comes with an LOA form the stylist’s wife, his 1964 Make-Up Artists and Hair Stylists union membership card, as well as a full photo LOA from JSA.
