Description

Eternally lamenting in his Chevy Chase, Maryland living room, Joe Boyd is hopeless in his longing for his beloved (and woeful) Washington Senators to overtake the mighty New York Yankees … until a pact with the devil himself transforms Boyd into Joe Hardy, slugging phenom. Such is the plot in the award-winning Damn Yankees stage and screen adaptation that reminded us that anything is possible! Issued for that 1950s production, these (18) relics are incredibly preserved reminders from an entertaining piece equal parts comedic, romantic and tragic. Highlights include: (2) Original Movie Posters: 27x41 and 28x22 US 1 Sheets listing cast members and score titles; Spanish Lobby Card: original 16-1/4 x 12-1/2” thick stock item. More on our website.

(2) Original Movie Posters: both show temptress “Lola” in her seductive bustier with cast members and song titles listed. Both present nicely and show evidence of theatre display. The 27x41 poster has pinholes (to facilitate previous display) and has been mended by tape applied to various spots on the reverse.

Spanish Lobby Card: presents beautifully! Crease-free with pinholes to facilitate previous display.

(2) Hardcover Books: includes:
The Year The Yankees Lost The Pennant (1954, W.W. Norton & Company) first print edition presents nicely with crisp pages, sturdy covers/spine and original dust jacket featuring an illustration by famed cartoonist Willard Mullin. Penned by Douglass Wallop, this novel, of course, was the inspiration for the subsequent Broadway play.
Damn Yankees (1956, Random House) first print edition containing the printed script for the play. Presents beautifully with original dust jacket.

Additional items include:

Soundtrack Album: a 33 RPM album released in 1955 by RCA. Original sleeve accompanies and album does not appear to have been played.

Autographed Original Movie Still: a 10-1/8 x 8” sepia-toned photo portraying (from left to right): Joe Boyd (Tab Hunter), Lola (Gwen Verdon) and Mr. Applegate (Ray Walston). Verdon has signed her likeness in blue ballpoint (“9” strength, no cert)

(4) Theatre Programs: includes:
1955 issued at New York’s 46th Street Theatre, this 32-pagew Playbill presents nicely with covers/pages complete.
1955 a 16-page guide with a production insert issued at Ford’s Theatre for a production in which understudy Devra Korwin played “Lola.”
1959 12-page guide issued for a stage production in which Tony Perkins starred as Joe Hardy.
1995 12-page guide issued at New York’s Kennedy Center as Jerry Lewis made his stage debut.

(5) Musical Scores: includes (3) song books (2 are duplicates) and (2) sheet music scores of “Whatever Lola Wants (Lola Gets).”

Pinback: 1 1-3/8”-diameter baseball-themed pin with “DAMN YANKEES” in red characters.
