Description

Babe Ruth’s clout continues to echo across the ages with this Ruth related memorabilia lot of (3). Featured are: 1.) an Official Babe Ruth League baseball (NM) off-white with bold stampings and very minor traces of toning, housed in its original MacGregor manufacturer’s box which presents in solid and handsome (EX) condition; 2.) 8x10 batting pose promo photo with blue facsimile signature and “Greatest Player Ever” caption (EX); 3.) 8x10 potentially rare promo photo with Harry Heilmann and two boys (VG-EX). More on our website.

While the MacGregor Box for the Babe Ruth League baseball is printed with “Official League” only, both the ball and box are stamped with matching model numbers “B74C”. It is reported that MacGregor used the same box type for both Official League and Babe Ruth League balls. The box presents in lightly handled condition with smooth clean surfaces, solid edges and corners, fully attached flaps and vivid colors/graphics, however it does show a few minor stress creases and moderate toning which are age appropriate conditions that have minimal impact on this well-preserved specimen. Our consignor reports acquiring this ball recently in unopened condition and opened it to determine the type of ball housed in the approximately six-decade old box. Condition of this ball and box support this claim, and even the ball’s tissue wrapper remains crisp. While the lower panel stamping on the ball shows minor ink migration, both the box and ball remain very pleasing.

The 8x10 batting pose photo presents better than the assigned technical grade of (EX) which is attributed to minor creasing at the top right corner which does diminish the appeal of the otherwise clean and solid souvenir. The caption printed on the bottom border reads in full as ““Greatest Player Ever” : “Greatest Player Ever”--Right Field Babe Ruth”.

The 8x10 Ruth and Heilmann photo is possibly unique, as research did not turn up a comparable example. Ruth is pictured wearing a Yankees uniform and Heilmann is wearing a Tigers uniform, dating the scene to the 1920s and considering Ruth’s fairly youthful facial features, most likely the early to mid-1920s. Printed on heavy stock this photo has a vintage appearance, however no details have been provided as to the actual age and type of this print. The surface finish is low luster, the facial images are somewhat grainy, the colors are muted, the bottom border appears to have been hand trimmed and there are a few stray black markings at upper left which affect the image of the boy Ruth is holding only, the other subjects in the photo are unaffected by these markings. Facsimile signatures appear across each of the HOFer subjects, with the Ruth name faded to the point of being only partially discernable.
