Legendary lensman George Burke supplied stock photos for the 1940 Play Ball set—yet almost none of these classic images have ever surfaced at auction. We are only aware of a large-format Honus Wagner ($1,300 in 2007) and a sepia Joe Jackson ($1,150 in 2008) until the arrival of this black-and-white Shoeless Joe. All of the hallmarks of Burke's style are here, from his customary smaller dimensions to his luxurious matte finish, from his Belmont Ave. stamping (noting the photo as a circa-1940 "Reproduction" rather than a 1910s original) to his caption coding system. Condition-wise, there's a vertical crease down the center, otherwise fine.
