Description

Although uncataloged, this 5-cent wrapper has long been thought to exist by hobby veterans—and here is the actual proof. We believe it is possibly the only one in existence. Measuring 3-1/8 x 5-7/8", the EX-condition survivor is accompanied by the photocopy of a wrapper guide page with a "Vintage Forum" post by collector Jack Janzen acknowledging "I've never seen a 5 cent ASTFBI wrapper." This is followed by a copy of a 10/7/1949 letter to retailers from Bowman Sales Manager W.J. Noonan Jr., reading in part, "FBI BUBBLE GUM, which you will remember as a very popular card gum series during the beginning of this year, is being reintroduced as a 1-cent package. FBI was only briefly on the market as a 5-cent package and was withdrawn to make way for Baseball Bubble Gum and the long spring and summer sales period for that product." Thus, few 5-cent packages were ever even produced—and the offered example may well have been a prototype.
