Description

Minus the glory of a Super Bowl appearance, Kansas-born running back Barry Sanders will (sadly) forever be overlooked in conversations regarding the NFL’s greatest player of all-time. A mere glance at the numbers he compiled over a 10-year career will convey all you need to know: 15,269 career rushing yards (third-most in NFL annals and far and away the highest total over a 10-year span); four rushing titles; never a season total of less than 1,115 rushing yards. In 1997, Sanders garnered his fourth rushing crown with a whopping 2,053 round yards. For his efforts, Sanders was a hands-down selection for the prestigious Mackey Award as the NFC’s leading rusher. This trophy was awarded to Sanders at the 1997 Mackey Awards NFLPA banquet. Crafted by R.S. Owens, the zinc casting relic stands 14”-tall with a 7”-diameter felt-lined base. It’s no coincidence that the football figurine bears a resemblance to an Oscar, as R.S. Owens has made Emmy Awards and Academy Awards since 1983. The preservation is remarkable with no rust, oxidation or surface flaws. This is a unique heirloom from a player whose athleticism transcended the game and reminds us that “best” and “champion” aren’t necessarily synonymous.
