In an industry where the term “rare” is often bandied about, the offered 1911 Jones, Keyser & Arras Cabinets #331 Walter Johnson is proof positive that the near impossible still occurs. Never. Nunca. Nie. In any language, this 108-year-old antique is the first such example of “The Big Train” to be made available for public auction with its full mount. Graded Authentic by SGC. This museum worthy relic was recently discovered by our Maryland-based consignor and entrusted to Huggins & Scott for its sale.
The tall fireballer is perfectly captured in a ballpark setting on this centered 3-3/8 x 5-1/2” sepia photograph which is accurately placed on the 4-7/8 x 7-1/4” gray-and-black mount. Four pinholes are placed near each corner and the perimeter has sustained only very minor corner/edge wear. Despite incidental staining near the lower left portion, the picture exhibits flawless registration. The moderately soiled reverse is inscribed “Walter Johnson (1887-1946) Senators – Won 414 games” in pencil. Additional back chipping and paper loss to the publisher’s name does little to impact this masterpiece’s overall presentation. A once-in-a-hobby-lifetime opportunity for the bidder with an eye for the very best.
