From the tropical island nation of Cuba comes this selection of rare tobacco card album pages. Touting the brands "Tomas Gutierrez Cigars" and "Diaz Cigarettes" in Spanish language banner designs at top and bottom are (4) pages from an album printed with photos of Major League baseball players from the 1924 season. Diaz cards and albums featuring Negro League and Cuban baseball team players were issued in 1923-1924 and are among the scarcest of Cuban tobacco issues. The 1924 Diaz/Gutierrez album of MLB team players also positions as very rare and we discovered just one of the corresponding cards for sale at the time of this listing, with a Clarence Mitchell card #70 listed as an SGC graded "1924 Diaz Cigarettes" example (though both SGC and PSA have graded a small number of others). The same photo used for this card appears on one of the pages included in the lot offered here.
Measuring 8-1/2 x 11-1/2", the (4) offered pages feature card-like photos of the 1924 Boston Braves ((2) pages) and 1924 Philadelphia Phillies ((2) pages), including the Mitchell photo noted above. Displaying approximate VG to VG-EX details, the offered pages bear light to moderate traces of adhesive residue and the (2) Phillies pages are overlapped and adhered together at center. There are also hole punches on all (4) pages at either the left or right edges. The Phillies pages feature a total of twenty-nine photos including slugger Cy Williams and manager Art Fletcher. Twenty-three players are pictured on the Braves pages, with HOFers Casey Stengel and Rube Marquard, player-manager Dave Bancroft and star first baseman Stuffy McInnis. Spanish language advertising copy printed on the reverse of the pages includes a box with "Nombre de las Novenas y Jugadores que componen la Liga Nacional" which translates to "name of the nines (teams) and players that make up the National League".
