Widely credited with inventing the “slider,” Hall of Fame hurler Chief Bender paced the circuit in winning percentage three times and completed nine of the 10 games he started over five separate World Series installments. This note is composed entirely in Bender’s hand and autographed. Measuring 8-1/2 x 2-1/8”, the correspondence was written in response to an Idaho-based autograph seeker. On the front (folded) portion, Bender (d.1954) has signed “Chief Bender” (“9-10” strength) and inscribed “1952 – Athletics.” On the inner portion, he has written: “Would sure like to get some of that good fresh water fishing that Idaho is noted for but guess I’ll never get the chance – Regards (signed) “C.A.B.” This scarce and desirable Cooperstown scripting comes with a full photo LOA from JSA.
