Description

In the gridiron's early days, coaches often were teachers, professors and scholars. Amos Alonzo Stagg began his education as an undergraduate divinity student at Yale and earned his master's degree at the Springfield YMCA School, graduating the same year that James Naismith invented basketball there! (Indeed, Stagg played in the first-ever public basketball game in 1892 and scored his team's only basket.) It's hard to imagine any modern-day NFL coach producing such an academic work of scholarship as Stagg did with his Scientific and Practical Treatise on American Football for Schools and Colleges, which features in-depth technical analysis and numerous diagrammed plays. The tome measures 4-1/2" x 6-1/4", boasts a nice gilt-embossed cover graphic, and displays sturdy GD/VG condition with taut binding and some pencil marginalia.
