Description

A couple years before his death, Jim Thorpe was back in the limelight because of Burt Lancaster's star turn in the biopic Jim Thorpe - All-American. Thorpe returned to his old stomping grounds in Marlin, Texas—site of New York Giants spring training back in the 1910s—and earned local fame for attending a memorable peewee football championship game between the Thorndale Red Raiders and the Sequoyah Indian School on a freezing cold day. Thorpe, who had suffered lip cancer by then, was also known to frequent the hot springs when he visited. It seems the circumstances here were that a young Arkansas collector obtained the signature in Marlin, where it was postmarked on 12/8/51 and then reached him back in Arkansas. There are typed and handwritten captions of "Greatest all-around athlete of all time" and "1911-12 / CARLISLE." Thorpe's blue-ballpoint "9" script reads, "To Bip / You are a grand boy. I sincerely hope you become a good man / from / Jim Thorpe." VG with tack holes in the two top corners from proud display. Full LOA from PSA/DNA. (Dated from 2000 and signed by James J. Spence.)
