Although it does not have the markers of Type I—crystal-clear image, stampings, paper caption—this photo remains quite desirable on the merits of its political connection, the stogey, the memorable bowler hat and the dating to Ruth's Murderers' Row prime. The scene hails from Al Smith's 1928 presidential election, which naturally appealed to Ruth because of Smith's Catholicism and opposition to Prohibition. The stiff, almost studio-quality paper stock and the antique-style matting suggest Type III status from the late 1920s, though the origins may be Type IV from the 1930s or 1940s. Some scattered light wrinkling, not affecting Ruth's face.
