Baseball had Hoboken's Elysian Fields as its birthplace, and basketball had Naismith's Springfield YMCA. Basketball's popularity spread so rapidly that within just five years, Spalding was already selling official wall-mounted hoops like this one (before the advent of backboards) with two screw-in mounting rods. The rim is approximately 19" in diameter, and Spalding sold them for $4 per pair. This offering exhibits phenomenal preservation and comes with a photocopy of the "basket ball goal" as advertised in Spalding's sales catalog, copied below the letter written from Naismith's Springfield YMCA to Spalding, stating, "[T]he Governing Committee of the Athletic League has decided to adopt your basket ball and goal as the official basket ball and goal for the coming year; and also to request you to publish the official basket ball rules." Hardcourt history at its best!
