There's a great deal of irony in Acme Newspictures' 3/1/39 paper caption: "LOCOMOTIVE LOU GEHRIG STARTS BALL SEASON RIGHT / ST. PETERSBURG, FLA. -- As the Yankee baseball team of New York opened spring training here, a familiar figure was Lou Gehrig taking a familiar cut at the ball in batting practice." Indeed, all that familiarity was on the verge of shattering, as this turned out to be Gehrig's final spring training, before his career was cut short a few months later by the debilitating disease that now bears his name. The 7x9 photo is one of the poignant last looks at our hero in all his glory. Typical peripheral newsroom usage such as edge tears, rippling and general wear. Encapsulated as Type I by PSA.
