Released from prison in 1990, Nelson Mandela won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1993 and became the first president of a democratic South Africa in 1994. Two years later, he bestowed his black-ink "9-10" signature and dated inscription "18-9-1996" on the half-title page of Higher Than Hope: The Authorized Biography of Nelson Mandela by Fatima Meer.
