An early glimpse into the formative years of our national pastime is provided with this magnificent circa 1887 Spalding Umpire counter. No, it wasn’t always “one, two, three strikes you’re out” as this extremely rare indicator holds a display capacity for “5” balls and “4” strikes (the standard four balls/three strikes went into effect in 1889)! Measuring 2-7/8 x 1-1/4,” this sturdy plastic relic features two functional dials to facilitate the antiquated ball and strike counts. All three original screws remain and the reverse is home to a firmly stamped Spalding trademark logo engraving. Despite expected soiling, surface abrasions and a carved reverse reading “PC,” this century-old artifact has withstood the century in especially fine condition.
